The Garden Route has a mysterious allure with its Mediterranean
climate and vegetation, the sheer extravagance of its tropical forests,
brilliantly hued birds, multitudinous exotic plant species, tranquil
inland lakes, densely wooded mountains, pristine beaches and meandering,
reed-banked rivers.
Elephants, Ostriches and Caves Safari Detailed Itinerary
| Day 1: |
Cape Town |
|
|
Today is the joining day in the beautiful city
of Cape Town. You will be met at the airport and transferred
to the Joining Hotel. If you arrive early, the remainder of
the day is free. There will be a pre departure meeting at
6pm, giving you the chance to meet your fellow travellers
and go through the itinerary in more detail with your guide.
|
| Day 2: |
Mosselbay |
Hotel |
Breakfast |
After breakfast at the hotel, you will be met
by your Tour Guide to start your tour of the Garden Route.
Today we drive down the coastline stopping along the way at
Hermanus, renowned for its whale sightings. From here we continue
to Mosselbay where we spend the night. First discovered by
Bartolomeu Dias more than 500 years ago, the town has a fascinating
history. Visit the world-wide known Post Office Tree, under
which, in 1501, a letter was left by a ship’s commander,
to be discovered by the commander of the third East India
fleet en route to India. Thus, South Africa’s first
post office came into being. It has been declared a National
Monument. Dominating the interior of the Maritime Museum is
the spectacular life-size replica of Diaz’s caravel,
the ship he sailed in when first anchoring in Mossel Bay.

| Day 3: |
Plettenberg Bay |
Hotel |
Breakfast |
After breakfast at your hotel, we continue
further down the Garden Route passing the towns of George
and Knysna and reaching Plettenberg Bay where we will be based
for 3 nights. We stay at a Lodge, a unique and relaxing playground
on the banks of the Keurbooms River Lagoon just outside Plettenberg
Bay, offering spacious comfort and style in beautiful, natural
surroundings. The afternoon will be at leisure to enjoy the
surroundings. A beautiful beach is a short walk away from
the hotel. |
| Day 4: |
Featherbed and Knysna Elephant Park |
Hotel |
Breakfast |
After breakfast at your hotel, we then make
our way to Knysna. We go on a guided tour of the Featherbed
Nature Reserve. The Featherbed Nature Reserve is a prime example
of eco-tourism and in order to protect the splendour of the
natural beauty, access to the Reserve is controlled. Numbers
are limited and visits are only permitted in the company of
the Reserve's specialist guides. The Featherbed eco-experience
starts with a 25-minute ferry cruise. Your local guide on
board will share fascinating tales about the Lagoon, the early
shipping industry and oyster cultivation.
On arrival at the Reserve, visitors can enjoy a drive to the
top of the Western Head in a 4 x 4 unimog vehicle with trailers,
stopping at a magnificent view point en route. Here unsurpassed
views of the Lagoon, mountains and Knysna can be enjoyed,
whilst our knowledgeable guides explain the history and ecology
of the Reserve. After the drive, your specialist guide will
take you on an optional 2.2 kilometre downhill walk.
We then visit the Knysna Elephant Park in the afternoon. Guests
are transported to the elephants on our tractor & trailer
where they will have the opportunity to touch, feed and photograph
our gentle giants and fall in love with our gorgeous baby
ellie's. Elephants love eating so don’t forget your
bucket of fruit and vegetables. There are no barriers or fences
to spoil the close encounter. Guests are then transported
back to the unique elephant curios shop and Askaris restaurant.
Later we return to Plettenberg Bay to our hotel.

| Day 5: |
Monkeyland, Tsitsikamma National Park |
Hotel |
Breakfast |
Today after breakfast, we head to the Tsitsikamma
Forest and enjoy the beautiful scenery in park. En-route we
visit Monkeyland for a tour of the facility. Monkeyland is
the world’s first free roaming multi-species primate
sanctuary. Monkeyland has as one of its aims, to create awareness
about the plight of primates and to show that with a greater
understanding of our primate cousins, that we can all live
in harmony.
The Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park, proclaimed in 1964,
lies in the heart of the Garden Route and extends five kilometre
out to sea. The park is 80 km of rocky coastline with spectacular
sea - and landscapes, fynbos, evergreen forests, deep river
gorges, beautiful flowers and small game, and teems with birds,
and at times, even whales and dolphins. There are a host of
optional adventure activities to partake in at the Tsitsikamma
Forest from Tree Top Canopy tours to bungee jumping.
We return to Plettenberg Bay at the end of the day.
|
| Day 6: |
Oudtshoorn |
Hotel |
Breakfast |
Following breakfast at the hotel, we depart
Plettenberg Bay and make our way back down the Garden Route,
leaving the coastline at George over the Outeniqua Pass into
the semi-desert Klein Karoo and onto the ostrich capital of
the world, Oudtshoorn.
We proceed to the Highgate Ostrich Ranch. Here we come face
to face with the biggest bird in the world. After lunch we
visit the Cango Caves, internationally renowned as one of
the world’s great natural wonders sculpted by nature
through the ages. Their fascinating limestone formation occurs
in a variety of ways. We visit the Cheetah and Crocodile Farm
(Cango Wildlife Ranch). Over 300 crocodiles, ranging from
50 cm to 4 metres in length, inhabit the ranch. |
| Day 7: |
Cape Town |
|
Breakfast |
After breakfast we make our way back to Cape
Town where the tour ends. Here you can connect with an onward
flight, or you may choose to spend additional time in Cape
Town. Please note that the drive will take about 4 hours,
