The Indian Ocean Island of Madagascar is the fourth largest island
in the world. From the bustling capital Antananarivo, we fly to
Nosy Be and from there sail around the islands in the warm waters
off Madagascar in a traditional dhow boat. Explore peaceful islands,
snorkel over colourful coral and maybe swim with whale sharks. Enjoy
some kayaking, fishing and relaxing on unspoilt beaches - this is
the ultimate paradise. By day, cruise the blue-green waters of the
sun drenched Indian Ocean and at night camp on the islands. Back
in Antananarivo we head to the Special Reserve of Andasibe. Here
we go on a night walk, search for the Indri Indri, the largest lemurs
on the island, discover the many species dwelling in the forest,
and visit Lemur Island. Our adventure ends back in the capital,
known as the "City of Thousands".
Madagascar Explored Detailed Itinerary
| Day 1: |
Antananarivo |
|
|
Today is an arrival day for you to arrive into
Antananarivo. There will be a meeting at 6pm at the meeting
point with a local guide, to advise you on the arrangements
for Day 2 and the cruise. If you arrive into Antananarivo
early, the day is free for you to explore at your leisure
or relax at the hotel.
|
| Day 2: |
See below for Itinerary |
|
|
Fly Nosy Be & Board Dhow. This morning
we take a flight to Nosy Be. You will be met on arrival and
transferred to the dhow.
Dhow Cruise around Various Islands - We board the
dhow and set sail for the islands! During the next 7 days
(6 nights) we will sail to some of the following islands.
Please note these are dependant on weather and tide conditions:
Russian Bay (also known as Ambavatory Bay) - a beautiful
and remote place opposite the Nosy Be archipelago. Enjoy the
fantastic marine life for snorkeling and fishing and maybe
you might spot a whale (in season – from October to
December) or a rare Whale shark. The tropical woods harbour
abundant birdlife, reptiles and lemurs.
Nosy Iranja (Island of Turtles) – the larger
and inhabited of the two islands, Nosy Iranja and Nosy Iranja
Kely are connected by a 1.5 km long sand bar, negotiable on
foot at low tide. Nosy Iranja is a peaceful and remote island
with crystal clear waters, good fishing, wonderful walks and
fantastic opportunities to sea kayak and explore on foot.
Iranja is a breeding reserve for hawksbill turtles.
Mahalina - we spend time here relaxing in the beautiful
surroundings, or kayaking up the mangrove swamps. The area
is great for snorkelling, fishing and spear-fishing. We may
use A-frame bungalows on Mahalina, instead of camping.
Lokobie Reserve – a protected reserve, Lokobe
offers wildlife galore with the likelihood of you spotting
several lemur species, colourful chameleons and maybe a snake
or two amid the forest!
Nosy Tanikely – a marine reserve teeming with
underwater flora and fauna, allowing us the chance for some
superb snorkeling in warm waters with great visibility. You
are likely to spot an amazing variety of marine life; from
coral, starfish and anemones to every colour and shape of
fish - and perhaps a turtle if you are lucky! With a bit of
luck, we may be able to spot the ring-tailed Lemurs while
stepping on to Terre Firma.
Nosy Komba – an island with quaint villages,
craft markets and famed for its habituated Lemurs, who may
take a jump onto your shoulders!
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included whilst on the dhow cruise.
Whilst on the cruise we will camp on the islands.
Please Note: Depending on the group size, we may be joined
by others for the dhow cruise.
Please Note: You are able to use the kayaks on board the dhow,
but you will need to take your own snorkel equipment if you
wish to go snorkelling.

| Day 8: |
Hell-Ville and end of Dhow Experience. Fly Antananarivo |
|
Breakfast |
We sail back to Hell-Ville port on Nosy Be
Island where our dhow adventure comes to an end.
We then transfer to the airport for the return flight to Antananarivo
where you overnight.
Tana also called the ‘City of Thousands’ is the
capital of Madagascar. It is the city where the first King
started to unify the different kingdoms of the island. The
city was built in stages: The high city, the first area occupied
during the royal period where the old queen's palace is situated,
the mid-city, where all the chic boutiques of the capital
are found and then the low city, which is the commercial area
of the town.
You may like to explore and walk around the city. Your walk
can start from the high city to see the Rova, the queen's
palace, the house of the first minister during these days,
which is now a museum; all built by Frenchman Jean Laborde
during the royal period. The mid-city, or the administration
area ends at the Rainiharo tombs and the lower town is situated
in the main avenue called ‘L'avenue de L'independence’
dominated by the railway station.
|
| Day 9: |
Antananarivo to Andasibe - Night Walk |
|
Breakfast |
This morning we will drive to Andasibe through
the green and luxuriant vegetation of the east. This first
step brings us to the humid part of the country with many
primary forests and lakes, and the landscape consists of rice
fields, waterfalls, and scarce forest stations. Along the
way we will see Merina villages in the rocky mountains.
We stop for lunch at the Reptile & Butterfly farm, finally
arriving to Andasibe between 3pm and 5pm. Check-in to the
hotel, and then at approximately 7pm we enjoy a night walk
within the Andasibe area to observe night active lemurs and
other nocturnal animals.
We will be staying in cabins surrounded by forest.
|
| Day 10: |
Andasibe Natural Reserve |
|
Breakfast |
After breakfast, we take a morning visit to
the Special Reserve of Andasibe, where you will discover the
many species dwelling in the forest. In particular, your guide
will search for the Indri Indri, the largest lemurs on the
island. This 810 ha reserve is unique with its endemic fauna
and flora. It contains a wide variety of orchids, canopy,
and endemic animals like chameleons, tenrecs, and many birds.
We also visit the Orchid Garden, after which we return to
our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, you will visit Lemur
Island at Vakona Forest Lodge to meet the resident Lemurs
up close!
The rest of your afternoon is at leisure – why not take
some time to relax by the pool, enjoy a horse ride, or visit
the Private Park of Vakona (horse-riding and visit to Private
Park are optional extras).
